Cases of tuberculosis are increasing in Tonj South County of Warrap State.
Michael Yai, the lab technician working in Don Bosco Hospital, said TB is on the rise and hasn’t been eradicated due to many reasons, Don Bosco FM reported.He explained that many people infected with TB ignore the symptoms and don’t come into the hospital, infecting others while they stay in the home.
Mr Yai said many people believe TB is inherited and that it is not an infectious disease often resulting in seeking traditional medicine and local remedies and drugs.
He urged people whose cough lasted for more than 2 weeks, have chest pain, loss of appetite and weight and showing no improvement after taking antibiotics to come to the hospital to be tested for TB.
Mr Yai said community advocates, those that mobilize their communities, have been trained to inform the people living in the remote areas about TB and its symptoms.
He added that that when a person comes has TB she or he is put on a regiment of drugs to combat the disease.
The treatment takes six months.
