Prices of clothes, shoes, bags and other materials have greatly increased in the markets of Yei County, Central Equatoria State.

One of the buyers, Peter Juma said he bought a pair of shoes and trousers at high prices of 70 and 40 pounds respectively.

He said the prices went high because of high transport costs incurred in importing the goods and the heavy clearance imposed on them in the border.

Ginyi Augustine, a retailer explained that he sells at a high price because the prices have increased in Kampala and that they expend more on border clearance and transport adding that they increase to get a little profit.

Mr. Augustine urged the government to remove heavy charges on retailers by different departments including County, State and Chamber of Commerce.

Yei Chamber of Commerce Financial Secretary, Bismarck Abdalla said prices of goods are not yet fixed because of the high dollar exchange rate against the local currency.

Mr. Abdalla called upon the business community to remain patient as they draft a policy to reduce prices.

He said if the government controlled the dollar in the black markets, the prices would educe immediately because the traders would go to the commercial banks to exchange local currency with dollars.
