Higher Education in South Sudan is facing enormous challenges which might prevent achieving the strategic objectives by 2017.

The chairperson of the Higher Education Council, Peter Adwok Nyabak on Wednesday said the national council plans may be affected and cannot make the universities administratively autonomous because strategic plan is lost in 2012.

He made his remark at the second session on higher education to fulfil the provision of Higher Education Act 2012.

Professor Adwok called on the members of the Council to be innovative if they are to cherish the transformation of the system.

He said his Ministry had reached an agreement with African Virtual University to provide VSats and digital connectivity to all universities in South Sudan beginning with the University of Juba.

Professor Adwok said the new system will help to resolve the shortage of academic staff by linking the universities lecture halls with teleconference.

Professor Adwok said some universities make sub-standard and unqualified teaching staff.

Professor Adwok called on the Council to address the issues of funding of higher education, research, students, academic staff and the role of university in the society.
