Yei County of Central Equatoria State has held on Monday the International Day of People with Disabilities under the theme “removing barriers and creating accessible and inclusive society for all”.
The Chairman of People Living with Disabilities in the County, Cocks Waiwai told Radio Easter that the day was to aware the communities that disability is not inability.He urged all the people to stop the mentality of overlooking those living with disabilities because they are also active in work.
Mr Waiwai said people living with disabilities are facing challenges of education, employment opportunities, and shelter.
The Secretary-General of Equatoria Union of Visually Impaired, Cornelio Wani Lodu advised disable colleagues to consider that they are part of the society.
He appealed to the parents to allow their disable children go to school despite their disability status.
Mr. Wani urged the government to open schools for the people with disabilities so that they also eradicate illiteracy in the nation.
Assistant Commissioner for Gender and Social Welfare in Yei County, Victoria Nasera Augustine called upon the people to desist from discrimination and stigmatization against people living with disabilities.
She revealed that her office had received 18,000 pounds contributed by the government, some non governmental and community based organizations.
