The Ministry of Telecommunications and Postal Services has launched officially the registration of all SIM cards of Zain, Vivacell, Gemtel and MTN mobile owners.

Undersecretary Juma Stephen Lugga told the press that the ministry was implementing a resolution from the Council of Ministers.

He said the registration of SIM cards will disclose the number of subscribers to facilitate future network expansion plans and helps subscribers to keep their number if they lose their card.

The Undersecretary said the registration also helps combating crime and tracing criminals.

He explained that the process ends at the end of December and unregistered SIM cards will be turned off in January until they are enlisted.

Mr Lugga called on mobile phone owners to cooperate with the operators by registering all their SIM cards.

He advised the citizens to produce work identity cards, nationality certificates, passports or even referendum voting cards to register their SIM cards.

Mr Lugga said chiefs will certify those without documents in rural areas.

He said the registration process will help the national security organs, subscribers and the ministry.

The registration includes Zain Connect SIM cards, and MTN and Vivacell internet mobile connections.
