Eastern Equatoria State Ministry of Health is training over 40 women as birth attendants in the rural areas on antenatal care.
Icaha Regina, a midwife at Torit Hospital said the women are trained to gain more knowledge on dangers of pregnancy, causes of abortion, mothers risk, signs and symptoms of pregnancy.She said it is necessary to sensitize the traditional birth attendants about antenatal care because more mothers die every year during pregnancy.
The traditional birth attendants were drawn from four Payams of Ifotu, Himodonge, Nyong and Isalor in Torit County.
