The UN population agency said on Tuesday that quality nursing and midwifery services are vital to reduce the high rates of maternal and child mortality in South Sudan.
Deputy Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Bannet Ndyanabangi, told CRN that National Nursing and Midwifery Association in the ten states were meeting to discuss ways to develop the association. He said the participants would see how to strengthen the two professions of nursing and midwifery to ensure quality services and to cut maternal and child mortality in the country.
Dr Ndyanabangi stressed that South Sudan has one of the top world maternal mortality rates and neonatal mortality is higher than in neighbouring countries.
He added that the figures are from a six years old health survey but the numbers might have fallen.
Mr Ndyanabangi made these statements at the beginning of the meeting of National Nursing and Midwifery Association.
