Traffic Police in Western Bahr El Ghazal have stopped more than 30 official government cars caught on private use.

Wau Traffic Police launched a massive campaign over the weekend in an attempt to get rid of cars and motorbikes without legal permits and number plates, Voice of Hope reported.

Traffic Police Information Director Deng John Akot told the press that over 520 motorbikes and more than 30 official government cars were stopped during the crackdown.

He said drivers were using government cars for private ends without the knowledge of their bosses and with no proper permits.

During the campaign, several accidents were reported in the hospital as motorcyclist tried to evade police checkpoints using back streets.

The police claimed that their charges were fair but motorcyclists complained that the cost of legal documents sometimes exceeded the actual price of a motorbike.

Hassan Awat Acuil, who chairs Western Bahr El Ghazal Transport Union, said his office would rescue registered motorcycle riders caught in the crackdown.
