A senior priest in the Catholic Diocese of Torit has called on teachers to encourage girls to pursue their education for the development of the nation.

Acting parish priest of St. Peter and Paul-Torit Joseph Ukello charged that teachers should always take the responsibility of encouraging girls to advance on their studies.

The Comboni Missionary warned teachers who tended to lure school girls into sexual relationships saying the nation cannot develop without educated women.

He added that impregnating pupils was a very serious crime.

Fr Ukello encouraged teachers to teach well in order to be remembered in the future for their role in the development of pupils.

The acting parish priest told teachers to show to pupils how to use toilets in order to keep them clean and the schools disciplined.

Fr Ukello made these statements on Tuesday at St Theresa’s Primary School in Torit.
