The commemoration of Torit Uprising Day has been postponed from Saturday towards the end of the month.

Eastern Equatoria Information minister Felix Otuduha told Radio Emmanuel that the celebration was postponed because President Salva Kiir Mayardit – who was to be the chief guest at the function – could not attend it.

He said he received a message from Brigadier General Malak Yuen, SPLA director of Information, saying President Kiir is on a trip and the celebration would not take place on Saturday, August 18, as planned.

Mr Otuduha said the event was pushed to an unspecified date towards the end of August.

He added that the postponement was not planned and the new date would be communicated to the public.

Torit Uprising Day Celebration has been gazetted nationally as “Veterans Day”.

The postponement of the Veterans Day follows the postponement of Martyrs Day celebration in Torit on July 30.

Eastern Equatoria government officials said Martyrs Day would be combined with Veterans Day on August 18 due to the austerity measures biting the government’s treasury.
