Security agencies in Eastern Equatoria have arrested a number of suspects involved in the mysterious death of a Kenyan medical doctor in Torit ten days ago.

Joseph Matu died on August 4 while being transported to Juba Teaching Hospital after he was arrested in the previous evening by security officers investigating the sale of illegal medicines in Torit.

The doctor was found in coma lying in a bed at Torit Civil Hospital.

Eastern Equatoria state deputy governor Jerome Surur Gama told to Radio Emmanuel that security personnel involved in the arrest that led to Dr Matu’s mysterious death were under custody as suspects.

Mr Surur did not reveal the number or names of those under arrest for investigations.

He explained that the state government established a High Level Investigations Committee after discovering that late Dr. Matu was not arrested by the police as mandated by the Constitution, but by national security agents.

The deputy governor said steps are being taken to avoid a repetition of such cases to citizens or foreign nationals.

Mr Surur said the High Level Investigation Committee waits the testimony from the wife of the deceased who is still in Kenya for the funeral of her late husband.
