The UK embassy in South Sudan launched an initiative to prevent Sexual Violence in Conflict in South Sudan to tackle sexual violence, as central to conflict prevention and peace-building worldwide.

Ambassador Alastair McPhail said during the launching ceremony three days ago that rape and other forms of sexual violence have been used as weapons against women, men and children in conflicts across the world.

He added that in South Sudan there are chilling tales of sexual violence and they must stop.

Ambassador McPhail explained that the UK wants to demolish the culture of impunity and bring those accused of sexual violence in conflict to face the full force of law.

The UK plans to use its Presidency of the G8, starting on January 1st 2013, to run a year-long worldwide diplomatic campaign on preventing sexual violence in armed conflict.
