BUDGET ALLOCATION TO STATES UNREASONABLE

Lakes State Legislative Assembly speaker has complained that the money allocated to the ten States by the national Government is not enough to meet the promises to voters.

The Government allocated 20 percent of the austerity budget to the ten state governments.

Speaker John Mariik Makur said the money given to the states’ governments by the national government is unfair since most of the revenue collected by the states is sent to the national finance ministry.

He wondered whether promises made to voters during the elections would be fulfilled with the current budget.

Mr Mariik said the central government neglected the ten States’ share of the national cake.

He added that the centralization of the local revenues has affected the states negatively.

Mr Mariik explained that local revenues from taxation were very low and yet they were taken by the central government.

He questioned how state governments would function without local revenue.

The Lakes State speaker made these statements on Monday during the opening of the fourth session of the Assembly.
