The Government of Western Bahr El Ghazal wants to launch weekly traditional dances for all tribes in the State to preserve their culture and traditions for the next generations.
Viola Alexander Omeli heads the Specialized Committee on Communication and Culture in the State Legislative Assembly. She said the Committee met with the Minister for Information, Derrick Alfred Oba, and discussed issues related to culture and traditions in the state, Voice of Hope reported.Ms Alexander added that constant social activities are needed to preserve culture and for the youths to understand their role and take distance from negative practices.
Similar weekly events used to be carried out in Wau, in Jebel Rabwa, but the authorities ceased the practices after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, in 2005.
Ms Alexander said the committee members discussed with the minister the challenges Wau Radio and Television are facing.
She revealed that the stations are short of money due to the austerity measures.
Ms Alexander explained that the absence of state government media will not allow the citizens to be aware of government projects and progress.
She added that the Committee also met with Deputy Governor Mauris Yel Akol on Monday to discuss the training of media practitioners and media coverage of the state assembly.
