Sudan is obstructing peace with South Sudan and boycotting the negotiations between the two countries despite a very generous aid economic package offered by South Sudan in exchange for the settlement of outstanding post-independent issues.
South Sudan Government spokesperson on Thursday returned from Zimbabwe and Angola on a diplomatic mission to alert members of the AU Peace and Security Council about the position of Juba on the unresolved post-independence issues.Barnaba Marial Benjamin told reporters at Juba International Airport that his country is offering Sudan over 8.3 billion US Dollars in cash and debt relief to reach a peaceful agreement.
Despite peace talks mediated by the AU High Implementation Panel, headed by Thabo Mbeki, both countries have failed to reach an agreement before the UN deadline expired on Thursday.
Dr Marial accused Khartoum of sabotaging the talks.
He added that South Sudan presented very concrete proposals that Sudan refused.
The UN and the AU have yet to decide what to do with both countries, including sanctions.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has one month to report to the Security Council on the status of the negotiations, including detailed proposals on all outstanding issues, in consultation with the AU Panel, and the chairpersons of the AU and IGAD.
