The delegations of South Sudan and Sudan resumed talks on post-independence outstanding issues yesterday in Ethiopia, one day before a UN deadline for the two governments to settle their differences expires.
At the end of July, the Government of South Sudan presented an “Agreement on Friendly Relations and Cooperation” but so far Sudan has rejected it.The agreement included a very generous financial package aid of over 8.2 billion US Dollars.
South Sudan proposed to pay between 7.20 and 9.50 dollars for every barrel of crude exported through the Sudanese oil infrastructure but Sudan wants 32 dollars instead.
The border is another issue yet to be negotiated.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit said recently that South Sudan would like to settle the border demarcation through international arbitration.
