The SPLA General Chief of Staff told citizens to refrain from inter-ethnic clashes because containing insecurity and defending the freedom of the people of South Sudan is costs a lot of money.

General James Hoth Mai told the attendants at Martyrs Day in Juba that too many innocent civilians lost their lives in inter-ethnic conflicts in South Sudan, Bakhita Radio reported.

He urged the nation to remember all who died in inter-ethnic violence as martyrs.

Gen Hoth assured the Government that the army is not involved in political activities but remains committed to defend the people and territories of the nation.

He said the SPLA also respects democracy as the best system of governing the country.

Gen Hoth’s comments could be meant to dispel rumours that President Salva Kiir survived a military coup last week.

The President in his speech downplayed the rumours as work of Khartoum to create panic among the people of South Sudan.
