South Sudan has celebrated the World Population Day on Thursday under the theme “universal access to reproductive health services” in Juba.
The South Sudan Chairperson of national Bureau of Statistic Isaiah Chol Aruai said in 2008 South Sudan population and housing census put the population at 8,260,490.He said out of the total population figures 4.28 million are male and female is 233.9.
Mr Chol added that 46.5 are reproductive’s ages.
Mr Chol said the figures from the IOM and Relief and Rehabilitation Commission give a total of 1.4 million from 2008 to June 2011.
He added that there is more need to plan for the people of South Sudan.
The national Minister for Health Michael Milly Hussein said this year celebration in South Sudan is unique beacuse it is the first of its kind after the country gained independence.
He said the theme reminds South Sudan as a nation of the challenges to provide quality health services to the people.
Dr Hussein added that it also provides the nation with the opportunity to face the challenges.
He said the civil war and marginalisation had hindered majority of South Sudanese access to health care.
The celebration that drew many people to Nyakuron Cultural Centre in Juba was organised by the South Sudan national Ministry of Health in collaboration with development partners.
