Cultural taboos are affecting especially women in Nuba Mountains by preventing them from eating certain kinds of food despite of calls from traditional leaders to stop them.

Many people, particularly the women, have become victims of food taboos especially during the last year when war brought famine to the region.

Elizabeth Kerala Tutu said that food taboos were practiced by the elderly people in the past to avoid over consumption and make food last.

Ms Kerala added that the elders claimed that the young couple would become abnormal if they ate from each other’s house before going through the wedding ceremonial rite.

She explained that women were also prevented from eating meat due to cultural misgivings related to the dowry.

Up to now some women still cook meat outside their husband’s houses.
