PRISONS SITUATION SAD IN SOUTH SUDAN

The situation of prisons in the whole South Sudan is quiet sad with prisoners suffering.

South Sudan Human Rights Watch Official, Elizabeth Ashamu told the CRN on Saturday that they visited 12 prisons across the country and found that infrastructures in the prisons are not enough.

She added that prisoners are in need of food, clean drinking water and medical care.

Ms Ashamu said most prisons they visited; they found that prisoners pay to get medicines.

She said in the justice system, they found numerous issues with the police and people are arbitrary arrested.

Ms Ashamu added that one third of the people in the prisons are not convicted waiting for investigation with some almost forgotten.

Ms Ashamu said Bentiu prison is build of iron sheet and lacks ventilation.

She said the Wau prison was build with the capacity of only 150 inmates, but now accommodates 400 inmates.

Ashamu said they discovered that children in the prisons are not separated from the adults.

She said there are 60 mentally ill inmates in Juba prison who are suffering without treatment.
