CHURCH LEADER SUPPORTS FIRST LADY’S INITIATIVE FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN

The Bishop of Rumbek Diocese (Episcopal Church of Sudan) has acknowledged efforts by First Lady Mary Ayen Mayardit through her charity Concern for Women and Children that aims to address issues facing women.

Bishop Alphaeus Manyang Kuctiel told Good News Radio at the closing ceremony for an advocacy workshop that the charity is taking care of 80 percent of women and children in the county’s population.

Bishop Kuctiel said that it is encouraging to learn that women in South Sudan are gradually taking up leadership positions adding that in the next 10 to 15 years will participation in the government will go beyond the 25 percent.

Concern for Women and Children program beneficiary Debora Agok Deng said that it is painful to see people suffering and that the First Lady has been touched by their pain and decided to send a team to train women in Lakes State.

She promised to use her leadership position in the community to extend the benefits of the input received from Concern for Women and Children by educating people about the challenges facing communities in South Sudan.

Sarah Nyireme, a Public Health and Community Development consultant and trainer with the charity, explained that the responsibility of her team is to in light people about issues affecting women and children in Lakes State.

She explained that issues of concern to women and children were discussed in detail at the training and that those who took part in the training are expected to spread a fresh message on these challenges and to carry out advocacy campaigns at the community level.

Ms Nyirme added that through advocacy more people will be enlightened about issues that are impoverishing families, propagating poverty, causes of infant and maternal mortality.

Ms Nyirme expressed hope that the beneficiaries of the training who included teachers and religious leaders will work towards making difference in Lakes State by educating their communities about issues facing women and children.

More than 50 teachers and church leaders in Rumbek took part in the 3 day workshop, which took place at the Rumbek Business Complex.
