The Council of Ministers has approved a national food strategy to address food shortages in emergencies and stimulate agricultural development to ensure food security in the country.

Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told the press after the Cabinet meeting that the national food strategy is also expected to provide long term opportunities to the people of South Sudan.

Dr Marial said the Council also approved the establishment of the Co-operative Bank of South Sudan in a joint venture with the Co-operative Bank of Kenya to provide loans and services to the people of South Sudan.

Kenya detains 51 percent of the South Sudan Co-op bank’s shares.

National Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, Betty Achan Ogwaro, presented both proposals to the Council of Ministers for approval.
