The Mayor of Juba City Council has called on residents to report to his office all tanker owners who charge high prices for water.
Mohammed Alhaj Babala issued a local order banning high charges on water taken from the river for drinking and other domestic uses.He told Bakhita Radio that citizens are co-implementers of this order because they are the ones dealing directly with the water tankers on a daily basis.
Mr Babala said his office arrested a number of water tanker owners because they were selling water taken directly from the river at high prices.
He added that the City Council does not have the means to check the prices practiced by the water sellers and asked the residents to write down number plates and report those who do not abide by the local order.
Mr Babala said that water from the river should not be sold above five pounds per barrel.
However, in Gudele and Gurei residential areas, a barrel costs ten pounds and in Kator and Gumbo, closer to the river, seven pounds.
