The women of South Sudan presented today a petition for the UN to declare a buffer zone along the South Sudan-Sudan border to put an end to suffering from bombardment and create conditions on the ground to demark the border.

South Sudanese women held rallies for peace across the country in a nationwide demonstration of support to President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s decision to pull the troops out of Higlig-Panthou and the South Sudan police from Abyei.

The women prepared an eight-point petition to the UN Secretary General on the persistent violence on the women and children in South Sudan.

The document urges Ban Ki-moon to take appropriate measures to engage Sudan’s Government in order to cease its aggression against South Sudan in violation of international laws.

It asks the UN and AU to apply sanctions to the parties that violate UN Security Council Resolution 2046.

The petition also urges the UN and the AU to implement border demarcation and deploy forces along the border to create a buffer zone putting and end to the suffering caused by bombings.

The women urged the Governments of Juba and Khartoum to resolve pending issues through dialogue.

Finally, the women told Mr Ban that they are for peace and not war and asked him to see that peace and development prevail in South Sudan.

The petition was sent to Mr Ban through Hilde Johnson, his special representative in South Sudan and the head of UNMISS, the UN Mission in South Sudan.
