Diplomats from key nations are trying to reach agreement quickly on a new U.N. resolution that would threaten non-military sanctions against South Sudan and Sudan.
Senior representatives from the five veto-wielding Security Council nations, the U.S., Russia, China, Britain and France and South Africa met behind closed doors Monday to revised draft of the resolution proposed by the United States on Thursday, AP reported.

The draft resolution endorses an African Union plan aimed at getting the two countries to step back from the brink of war and resolve their differences.

Diplomats said the revised draft under discussion still expresses the Security Council’s intention to adopt measures under Article 41 of the U.N. Charter in case of non-compliance by South Sudan and Sudan.

Article 41 authorizes the council to impose non-military measures such as economic sanctions to implement its resolutions.
