A female teacher from Don Bosco Bongo Primary School in Tonj South County decried lack of community awareness on girl child education in South Sudan.
Justine Chemutai, of the Sisters of Mary of Kakameka, said the girl child education in South Sudan is low due to some negative aspects of culture, Don Bosco FM reported.She explained that early and forced marriages and defilement are the main obstacle to girl child education in South Sudan.
Sister Justine added that psychological problems, early pregnancies, low number of female teachers, domestic works and the sexual harassment are other threats to girls’ education.
She said parents are not able to support girls’ education thinking that they are wasting their wealth and properties.
Sr Justine urged the citizens of South Sudan to realize girls’ potentiality and allow them their rights to education adding that education is an engine to better life.
She urged the communities to detach from unhealthy cultural norms that are negatively influencing girl child education and called them to work hard in promoting girls’ education.
