Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement for Democratic Change (SPLM-DC) has denied any involvement in the recent clashes between the army and a militia group in Malakal.

Leader of Minority Onyoti Adigo Nyikwech told the press that his party was taken by surprise when President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Sunday announced that the SPLM-DC was behind the clashes with the SPLA around Malakal last week.

He said SPLM-DC is a political party and has no military wing or association with any armed group.

Mr Adigo said his party is for national unity and prosperity.

SPLM-DC Acting Secretary General Sistor Olur Erista called on all political parties in South Sudan to unite and overcome the difficulties the country is undergoing.

He said this is not time to play politics of division among the people, parties and stakeholders in the new nation.

Mr Olur urged all people who have taken arms against the government of South Sudan to use negotiation as means of solving problems once and for all.

The party was reacting to President Kiir’s statement on Sunday at Saint Theresa’s Cathedral accusing the SPLM-DC of involvement in the last week’s clashes between the army and a militia group around Malakal.
