The President of the Republic issued a statement yesterday laying down some conditions before South Sudan armed forces leave the oil-rich area of Higlig, occupied since Tuesday.

Salva Kiir Mayardit issued said South Sudan is prepared to withdraw its forces from Higlig if a clear guarantee can be provided that the area will not be used by Sudan to attack the border areas.

The President also asked the UN to deploy neutral forces to Higlig until Juba and Khartoum settle their border disputes.

Mr Kiir reminded the international community that Sudan is still occupying Abyei despite repeated calls for both armies to live the area.

The president repeated that South Sudan will not use force to resolve the border disputes.

Mr Kiir reiterated South Sudan’s readiness to resume post-independence negotiations to resolve all outstanding issues.

The president reminded the international community that it was Sudan who walked out of the talks in Ethiopia earlier in the week.
