A students’ association is calling for the compensation of the victims of the recent clashes at the University of Juba to pave way for peaceful negotiations towards the urgent reopening of the university.
Mbiko Yesu is the Secretary General of the Juba University Equatoria Student Cultural Association. He told Bakhita Radio this morning that several students lost laptop computers, beds, sleeping tents, books, handouts and cloths during the incidents that took place at the University of Juba last week.He said anybody responsible of the looting should compensate the victims.
He added that his association is engaged in negotiations to reform the Students’ Union in order to allow free political expression in the University.
Mr Yesu denied that his association had problems with any ethnic groups in the University campus.
He explained that his team was trying to bring reform to the Students’ Union because they were unable to resolve students’ grievances.
Last week, ethnic clashes erupted at the Atlabara campus leading to the closure of the University of Juba.
