Students from the colleges of medicine and veterinary sciences in Bahr El Ghazal University took to the streets of Wau this morning demanding the immediate start of their lectures.
The students carried banners saying the university administration failed to give a reasonable answer to their request to have lectures started, Radio Voice of Hope reported.Medical student Amule Nickson Raphael described the administration’s efforts as futile.
The university administration last month promised to start lectures during a similar rally by medicine and veterinary students and formed a committee to go to Juba and Khartoum to recruit lecturers.
Kuol Pal, the dean of academic affairs at the college, said the team that was sent to Khartoum returned to Wau and was expected to report to the deans’ meeting today.
He added that some lecturers were ready to come to Wau to teach if they were paid in hard cash.
Dr Pal said the report will be sent to the ministry of higher education for budgeting.
However, the students insist that if the administration cannot provide lecturers it should close the two colleges of medicine and veterinary.
Students dressed in white lab coats blocked the main road to the university for more than five hours.
The manifestation was peaceful.
