At least three civilians died yesterday following a protest in the vicinity of Kabkabiya, North Darfur over the relocation of a local market.

UNAMID, the UN-AU peacekeeping mission in Darfur, said in its daily media brief that the dispute broke out when the population confronted the Sudanese police over concerns that the Bergi market was to be relocated by the local commissioner.

Two women were reported killed in the protest.

After the incident, a crowd of more than 200 moved to UNAMID’s nearby camp, searching for the commissioner.

In a scuffle with the peacekeepers, three UNAMID personnel were injured and a civilian shot dead.

The situation is stable following calls for peace by community leaders.
