The head of UNMISS, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, said yesterday at the SPLM National Liberation Council that the ruling party should now build the country on the principles it fought for over 21 years.
Hilde Johnson told the members of the National Liberation Council that the SPLM fought a struggle for freedom that was achieved through the independence of South Sudan. She said the ruling party now faces the challenge to ensure that the principles of freedom and democracy are for all: citizens, civil society groups, political parties, women and youth.
Ms Johnson added that the SPLM being a dominant party has the responsibility to learn from the past and from other movements to prepare its transition by reforming and restructuring itself.
The SPLM started yesterday in Juba its Second National Liberation Council Meeting to adapt the party and its documents to the independent South Sudan.
