The SPLM yesterday briefed a delegation of South Africa’s ruling party on post independence negotiations between South Sudan and Sudan.

SPLM Deputy Secretary General Ann Itto told the press in Juba last evening that the delegation of the African National Congress (ANC) came for a follow up on the negotiations that are taking place between the governments of Juba and Khartoum on oil, citizenship, security and Abyei issues.

She said the two ruling parties signed a memorandum of understanding in 2009 to develop a framework that will help the SPLM and the ANC to provide leadership and programs that will help develop democratic system in both states.

Dr Itto said the SPLM briefed the ANC delegation about the steps taken to come up with an agreement that will result into two viable nations living peacefully next to one another.

She added that the SPLM-led government will continue to negotiate with Khartoum but will not accept any agreement that compromises the interests of South Sudan.

Dr Itto said the SPLM told the ANC that in the area of oil Khartoum owes South Sudan millions of dollars in arrears including the oil they confiscated in Port Sudan.

She explained that the two-day meeting discussion with the delegation will look into ways to strengthen relations between the two parties.
