Early marriage is the major factor affecting girls’ education in Lainya County.
Lainya County Education Director, Obadiah Manasseh Milla, said out of 87 students sitting for the Sudan School Certificate examinations today in Loka Secondary only eighteen are girls, Radio Easter reported. He added that there is a huge challenge in South Sudan that girls tend to attend school in good number from primary one up to five, but they drop out after reaching certain levels due to early marriages or economic factors.
Mr Obadiah said the county authorities are working hard with the support from NGOs to mobilize the community to avoid the wrong attitude of neglecting girls’ education.
He appealed to the students sitting for the examinations to consider it seriously because they will be the next leaders of the Republic of South Sudan.
