The seven women who were sent for a six-month study tour on solar power technology in India returned to Juba yesterday.

The women, who have been nicknamed grandmother engineers, went to India in September of last year.

Nkumba Cissy Marena, head of UN Women in South Sudan, said the engineers will teach what they learnt back in their places.

She added that the communities will prepare workshops where the engineers assemble solar energy systems with material provided by the UN.

The undersecretary at the national ministry of Gender and Social Welfare, Esther Eluzai, said the project will cut on the costs of electricity because the solar energy is much cheaper than candles and fuel.

UN Women promised to continue supporting the women with the necessary solar energy materials.
