More than 70 percent of the over 300,000 refugees from South Kordofan are under 18 and their security is apparently compromised by the recent escalation of the conflict and deterioration of security in the disputed border areas.

This was revealed after UNHCR concluded the registration of Sudanese refugees at camps in Unity State of South Sudan.

Mireille Girard, who heads UNHCR in Juba, told CRN that the bombardments along disputed areas of South Kordofan forced many children to escape from home and school to the refugee camps, accompanied by their teachers.

Ms Mireille said the refugees arrive very weak at the camps after walking long distances with little food from South Korodofan to South Sudan.

She added that they need particular assistance to recover from their ordeal.

Ms Meirelle noted that UNHCR and other agencies are working on contingency plans to evacuate some camps if they are bombed or the fighting comes close.

She said the agency is stocking food and non-food items like medicines, blankets and mosquito nets ahead of the rainy season to cater for the refuges especially in Mabang.

Ms Mereille explained that flooding is an issue during the rainy season and the agency is looking for higher grounds for the refugee camps.

She added the registration will continue in Mabang are of Upper Nile.
