Over 30 primary school teachers of Lakes State have completed the first phase of a four-year training on the unified Curriculum of South Sudan.

The training was organized by the Department of Education in the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek and Solidarity with South Sudan, and drew teachers from various primary schools in the state.

Diocesan Education Coordinator Sr. Maureen Limer told the participants to go back as determined teachers who are present in the school at all the time, able to offer guidance and be relied upon by their pupils.

She urged teachers to practice what they learned and cover the whole syllabus.

Program Coordinator for Solidarity with South Sudan Sr. Margaret Sheehan told the teachers that they have a big task of educating the children and the illiterate parents through the pupils.

She said in Malakal school children are teaching English to their mothers.

Representative of the State Ministry of Education Isaac Kon Mabor said South Sudan faces challenges of illiteracy, poverty and insecurity that directly hinder development.

He added that these challenges are met through education.

Mr Isaac told the teachers to be role models to other teachers who could not attend the training so that they can learn from them.

Malual Arop, representing the trainees, appreciated the Diocese and its partners for conducting the training successfully.

He appealed to donors to facilitate the training of the four phases and help them with bibles, dictionaries and computer lessons.
