Aircraft from the Sudanese Air Force have bombed an oil field in Unity State of South Sudan, destroyed two oil wells and caused some environment damage.

National Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told the press this morning that yesterday afternoon the Sudanese planes bombed an oil field in Panakuac Payam of Pariang County, in Unity State.

He said oil wells number five and eight were hit and its wellheads and flow lines destroyed.

He added that two cars were also destroyed in the attack, but there was no loss of life.

Dr Marial said that there was an oil spill in both wells.

He added the Government strongly condemned the hostile attitude of the Republic of Sudan and its violation of South Sudan’s airspace but there will be no escalation of tensions on the side of South Sudan.

Dr Marial said South Sudan will present a strong protest at the UN Security Council and at the African Union for this gross violation of the non-aggression pact signed by South Sudan and Sudan two weeks ago.

He added that South Sudan is making urgent arrangements to secure its air space.

The hit oil field is explored by the Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company and stays about 70 kilometres from the border with the Sudan.
