The President of the Republic travelled to Kenya today to take part in tomorrow’s ground breaking ceremony of a new Kenyan port in the Indian Sea.
Salva Kiir Mayardit will join President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya and Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia to flag off works at the new Lamu Port in the Kenyan Cost.National Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin said today in Juba that the new port facility will serve South Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda.
He added that the ground breaking ceremony was an important moment.
South Sudan signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kenya to build a pipeline to Lamu Port and a refinery at the facility.
Lamu Port will have three times the capacity of Mombasa and costs 3.5 billion US dollars.
A new railway line will connect Ethiopia and South Sudan with Lamu.
