The Government of South Sudan signed yesterday a comprehensive deal with the late George Athor’s rebels of the South Sudan Democratic Movement.

Government spokesperson Barnaba Marial Benjamin told journalists at the media briefing that the government and the SSDM signed a peace agreement yesterday at Pigi County, Jonglei state.

He explained that the deal is a comprehensive agreement because it covers cease fire and political representation in both national and state governments.

Dr Marial added that the agreement also opens the way the reintegrate of rebels into the national army, disarmament and compensation to the affected areas.

The spokesman said the deal showed the government’s commitment to reach out to various militia groups following President Salva Kiir’s amnesty issued last year.

He added that the agreement singled out the necessity of South Sudanese people to resolve their issues through reconciliation and peace processes.

Dr Marial promised to make public the details of the agreement later on.
