Students from the College of Medicine in the University of Bahr El-Ghazal yesterday staged a peaceful demonstration in Wau demanded the immediate beginning of lectures.

Medicine students, who were attending Upper Nile and Bahr El-Ghazal universities in Khartoum and now are in Wau, carried banners and slogans demanding that the university administration provided them with lecturers, accommodation and clean water.

State Governor Rizik Zachariah Hassan convened an urgent meeting with the University Administration and the Medicine Students’ Committee.

The Governor asked the University administration to hold a senate meeting and form a delegation to go to Juba and Khartoum in search of lecturers.

Governor Rizik refuted claims by the university administration that the oil shutdown had affected the lecturers’ salaries adding that they have the money they need to run the institution.

A female member of the Medicine Committee said despite their petitions and patience the administration never found a desirable solution for their requests of being put together in the same dormitory and be sent to Juba.

University Principle Nyitaya Aywen Deng called on students and the administration to cooperate and understand the challenges the nation is facing.

He said the circumstances are difficult and students should understand that.

The university administration did not give any response to the students’ demands, but asked for time and a quick release of funds from Juba.
