Civil servants from Western Bahr el Ghazal State are in Wau for a two-day workshop on gender mainstream issues.

The training, organized by Adam Smith International, started yesterday morning and is being attended by 50 participants from different ministries, Radio Voce of Hope reported.

The workshop aims to create gender responsive organizations by improving knowledge about gender work and providing skills to handle gender issues.

Maria Makabito, a gender officer in UNIMISS at state level, said she was happy that the state has recognized the importance of prioritizing gender issues.

She added that sensitivity on gender issues is a must for civil servants.

Ms Makabito said gender work needs political support in order to move ahead.

Faith Kasiva, gender expert at Adam Smith International and one of the organizers of the workshop, said the event should come out with a plan for every ministry on gender work management.

She explained that gender is a very contested issue in traditional societies and the participants should learn skills to convince the political leaderships and civil servants to address gender issues.

Adam Smith international is an NGO working in South Sudan that offers workshops on capacity building in various areas.
