Lakes State Governor announced that it supported the national government’s decision to halt oil production and urged the International community, UN, African Union and IGAD member states to back South Sudan’s position.
Governor Chol Tong Mayay told journalists in a press conference yesterday that the international community should urge Khartoum to respect and abide by international agreements and standards. He pledged his full support to President Kiir’s cabinet decision to shutdown oil production in the country arguing that the decision was to protect the oil and it is in the best interest South Sudanese.
Eng Tong lauded the Council of Ministers for tolerating all forms of aggression and provocation by the Sudanese government and for taking a courageous decision to put an end to the oil theft.
He argued that Khartoum has been engaged in stealing the natural resources of the people of South Sudan before the war, during the CPA interim period and continued even after South Sudan became independent.
The governor urged the people of Lakes State to endure the negative impact on South Sudan’s economy following the decision to halt the country’s oil production, the main source of revenue to the young nation.
