The UN has announced that the transport by air of much needed relief to Jonglei’s disaster area costs five million US dollars.

The Government of South Sudan has declared Jonglei as disaster zone after a new wave of inter-tribal fighting erupted at the end of the year leaving over 60,000 people in need of assistance.

The UN announced it was mounting the most complex and expensive life-saving aid operation in South Sudan.

UNOCHA, the agency that coordinates humanitarian aid, said in its South Sudan’s weekly bulletin that logistics and coordination hub for the operation has been set up in Pibor town and humanitarian organizations are rapidly scaling up their presence on the ground.

The agency added that it earmarked 20 million dollars for humanitarian operations in South Sudan, including assistance to Jonglei State, Abyei displaced people and refugees from the Sudan in Upper Nile and Unity states.
