Yei Prison inmates have decried the inhuman living conditions in the jail including overcrowding.
Some inmates told Radio Easter that they do not have mattresses for sleeping, the structures are poor, and the food is not enough. They complained that the prison was overcrowded and was very hot due to lack of enough space to accommodate the current number of inmates.
The director of Yei Prison Lieutenant Christo Amin said the prison was built in 1960 and remains untouched ever since.
He added that it accommodates from 182 to 250 inmates, one of the largest prisons in the state.
Mr Amin said he raised the issue of renovation works and construction of new cells with the state authorities but he got no answer yet.
The county authorities said they do not have budget for works in the prison.
He added that the prison does not have a fence and it is overcrowded.
Mr Amin appealed to the communities to resolve issues with the local chiefs before sending people to the prison.
He urged the State authority to speed up the allocation of funds for the rehabilitation of prison.
