The head of the UN refugees agency, UNHCR, went today to Khartoum in a mission to broker a dignifying solution to people of South Sudan living in the Sudan.

Antonio Guterres told the press this morning in Juba before leaving for Khartoum that his visit meant to find a dignifying solution for Southerners living in Khartoum that takes into account their human rights.

Mr Guterres said there are at least 700,000 Southerners living in the Sudan and the majority wants to come to South Sudan.

He added that the repatriation needs a very good cooperation between the two governments.

Mr Guterres said he wanted to discuss with the governments of Juba and Khartoum the problem of refugees in both countries.

He added that humanitarian problems need political solutions.

Mr Guterres explained that the UNHCR wants to have a frank dialogue with both Khartoum and Juba governments to discuss issues of humanitarian action in order for all refugees to be able to access critical aid.

The UNHCR chief said it was impossible to bring all South Sudanese from Khartoum until April.

He added that people need to see their situation addressed and good cooperation between the two governments is critical.

Mr Guterres appreciated the efforts by the authorities and local communities to welcome over 75,000 refugees in South Sudan despite of their own problems.
