The head of the UN agency for refugees has appealed today to the international community to assist South Sudan with massive humanitarian support.

UN High Commissioner for Refuges Antonio Guterres visited South Sudan to mark six years of UNHCR’s presence in the region.

Mr Guterres told the press this morning before leaving for Khartoum that the new country faces huge humanitarian challenges and needs massive assistance from the international community to be able to deliver services to its people.

He said the refugees from Blue Nile, South Kordofan and Abyei, the returnees and the internally displaced people Ð almost 900,000 people in his calculations Ð are humanitarian challenges of huge dimension facing the new nation of South Sudan.

Mr Guterres visited refugee camps and returnees during his three-day stay in South Sudan.
