Authorities in Lainya County have recovered more than 770 guns in a voluntary disarmament exercise that started one month ago.

Lainya County Press Secretary Bullen Lugala told Radio Easter over the phone this morning that Col. Angelo Akok Akok Kiir, who was in charge of the disarmament exercise, appreciated the citizens of the county for voluntarily handing over their guns to the government.

Mr Lugala said the exercise ran smoothly with the help of the traditional chiefs, headsmen and elders.

He added that the communities were holding guns to defend themselves from militias and Ugandan rebels but now the government and police take responsibility for public security.

Mr Lugala announced that the exercise will be held across all counties of Central Equatoria to reduce crime rates in the state.
