The Catholic Bishop of Torit has called on citizens of South Sudan to initiate the New Year with peace, respect and love for the country.

Bishop Johnson Akio Mutek made the call during the celebration of New Year’s Mass at Tirangore Boma of Hiyal Payam in Torit County of Eastern Equatoria state, Radio Emmanuel reported.

He urged Christians to change in the New Year to become friends and let peace reign.

The Bishop recalled that Eastern Equatoria initiated the resistance against injustice to bring peace into the new nation.

Bishop Akio called for discipline and respect in the community and among the different institutions.

He said indiscipline and lack of respect for the rule of law are dishonest to the nation.

He hit at government officials who drink alcohol during work hours and in uniform, saying no one believes those who smell alcohol while on duty.

Eastern Equatoria Governor Louis Lobong Lojore added that women should advise their husbands against drinking alcohol.

He urged young girls to avoid marrying drunkards because he said they are useless to the society.
