The Governor of Lakes State has attributed the lack of motivation and poor performance from civil servants in Lakes State to low salaries, arguing that the monthly remuneration of most government employees needs to be reviewed upwards.

Chol Tong Mayay told the participants at a Christmas party organized for the staff and families working at the State Secretariat that many government workers leave their after 11 AM to look for other means of survival because their salary cannot meet their needs.

The governor said food prices were soaring in the state and it was impossible to survive on a salary of 250 pounds.

Eng Tong announced that South Sudan Government plans to upgrade civil servants’ salaries.

He warned employees who flee from duty when their bosses are away, saying that such people will face disciplinary action including salary cuts.

The Christmas party, the first one of its kind in Lakes State, was organized by the State Secretariat bringing together families of employees working at the Governor’s office with ministers and other government officials in attendance.
